Nutrition plays one of the biggest roles in your pet’s lifelong health. From supporting healthy growth in puppies and kittens to managing chronic medical conditions in senior pets, the right diet can help pets live longer, healthier, and happier lives. Because every pet has unique nutritional needs, there is no single “best” food for every dog or cat.

At Pet Wellness Veterinary Center, our nutritional recommendations are based on your pet’s age, breed, lifestyle, medical history, and the latest veterinary research. During every wellness visit, we’re happy to discuss your pet’s current diet, answer questions, and help you choose a nutrition plan that supports their long-term health.

Choosing a Quality Diet

Pet food labels can be confusing, and marketing claims don’t always tell the whole story. Rather than focusing on trendy ingredients, veterinarians evaluate diets based on nutritional adequacy, quality control, research, and formulation expertise.

We generally recommend diets that meet AAFCO nutritional standards, are formulated by veterinary nutritionists, maintain strong quality control, and invest in long-term feeding trials (such as Hill’s Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Royal Canin).

Veterinary Therapeutic Diets & Supplements

Prescription veterinary diets are specially formulated to help manage certain medical conditions like kidney disease, urinary issues, food allergies, diabetes, and joint disease. These diets contain carefully balanced nutrients that cannot be replicated by simply adding supplements at home.

If your pet requires supplements (such as for joint health, brain function, or digestive support), we recommend choosing products that carry the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) Quality Seal, demonstrating a commitment to responsible manufacturing practices.

Healthy Weight & Body Condition

Maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the simplest ways to improve your pet’s quality of life and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Pets at a healthy weight are less likely to develop arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and breathing difficulties.

During every wellness examination, we assess your pet’s Body Condition Score (BCS) and discuss nutritional recommendations to help maintain an ideal weight throughout life. Any dietary change should be made gradually over 7–10 days to reduce the chance of digestive upset.
